Since our launch in January 2021, one of the top questions our users have asked is ‘when is Scaniverse coming to Android?’. That’s why we’re so excited to let you know that starting today, Scaniverse is available for Android users on the Play Store, bringing 3D scanning and creation to more users around the globe.

Capture, Edit and Share your 3D creations

With Scaniverse on Android, you get the best features of our iOS app. Scan your surroundings, crop and edit models, and share or export your creations with the world. We’ve also included the recently launched 3D Gaussian splatting feature, which enables you to capture incredible photorealistic details of your favorite places and objects. With this we are also introducing the world’s first 3D on-device splat reconstruction capabilities on Android — bringing you speed and privacy with zero storage costs. It’s free, fast and unlimited.

Behind the Scenes: Porting Scaniverse

Creating the Android version of Scaniverse was a challenging but rewarding journey. Here’s a glimpse into how we did it. The original iOS app was built using Swift and native C++ code. For Android, we chose the Flutter framework to create a cross-platform implementation, reusing the native C++ components where possible.

Unlike some modern iPhones which come equipped with LIDAR sensors, Android phones do not, hence we’ve had to rely solely on camera data for 3D reconstruction via photogrammetry mode. Additionally, optimizing the app for performance and stability across a diverse range of Android devices with various SoCs, CPUs, and GPUs required considerable effort. We managed to reduce processing times from over over 30 minutes to just 4–5 minutes on high-end Android devices. Although this initial release may not match the speed of modern iPhones, it still offers impressive performance and quality on today’s Android devices.
